The course will examine what philosophers and psychologists have thought about the overall meaning of life. We shall look especially at the constituents of meaning within people’s lives, and examine the character of love, hope, suffering and friendship as contributive to meaning. Among others we shall consider some of the thinking of Friedrich Nietzsche, Martin Heidegger, Erich Fromm, Viktor Frankl and Carl Jung. This is a beginner’s course. No prior knowledge of philosophy or these thinkers is expected or assumed. Course fees: £135 / concessions £95.
